Chapter 12: The Legend behind the daggers

“Oh, this is Hikari-Chan. She’s the new girl…Ya know, the one that we gave the Onigiri to. She’s just hanging out with us today. We were sparring as well.” Kotori said.

“Hmmm, really?” Shizu smiled “Pleased too meet you!” She shook Hikari’s hand, who smirked. Naruto tilt his head at the snowy-haired teen. Who, in turn, stared back intently with her bright cerulean eyes, placing her hands on her hips.

“If you don’t mind me asking……are you the kitsune-boy I’ve been hearing about?” Naruto’s eyes widened and he blushed even more. Shizu put her arm around the blonde and giggled.

“Fox-boy, in the flesh!” She exclaimed, grinning. Hikari smiled and held out her hand.

“Well then, Pleased to meet you!” Naruto looked up at the jovial sixteen-year old. He was surprised at the fact that she didn’t seem to care about the Kyuubi. She was the only one, besides his very close friends, that hadn’t hesitated, shunned or abused the boy before really getting to know him. The blonde was extremely pleased with this, showing it in his smile.

“Y-you too-” He replied shaking her hand.

“Soooooooooooo…how was sparring?” Shizu was perched in the oak tree. The violet-haired Kunoichi, looked up at her.

“Oh…it was nothing. Sasuke just got his ass whooped by the new girl.” Kotori smiled calmly like it was no big deal. This, of course, pissed the Uchiha off to no end, who turned and scowled at her, sending both Naruto and Shizu into hysterics.

“Lord Kami…Sasuke-Teme…you’re Pathetic!” The blonde exclaimed.

“Sh-SHUT UP!” Sasuke snapped back. “She’s tougher than she looks, ya know.” He crossed his arms and turned away.

“Or maybe the great Uchiha Sasuke’s lost his touch?” Naruto grinned impishly.

“Why don’t youfight her then, Naruto-Kun?” the Uchiha retorted mockingly. Naruto just smiled triumphantly, turning to the girl next to him.

“Fine then!” He reached into his holster. “C’mon Hikari, show me what you’ve got!” In response, the girl rolled her eyes and gave him a ‘Well…you coming at me or not?’ sarcastic glance. Naruto ran straight at her, a kunai in each hand. Hikari’s eyes instantly flashed bright yellow, and the knives flew backwards into the oak tree behind the boy. Shizu stared, wide-eyed at the two weapons, which stuck fast just below the branch she was residing in. Naruto stopped in his tracks and swerved around at the kunai too.

“H-how did you?” Hikari simply pointed upwards, Naruto looked confused. “The sun?! What?”

“That’s my energy source. I may seem strong, but I can only use my special attacks when the sun is completely visible.” She sighed. “Other than that, all I’ve got is Taijutsu.”

“Are you two done “playing” with each other yet? ‘Cuz I’m heading back to Ichiraku!”

Naruto swerved around back to Shizu. “B-but, you just ate!”

“Last one there’s paying!” The brunette leapt from the tree and ran. Kotori and Sasuke sighed and trailed behind.

“You comin’ guys?” Shizu exclaimed. Hikari took one more look at Naruto, shrugged and followed the trio.

“B-but…Ugh, you guys! Hey wait for me! I barely have any money left!” The blonde, now officially flat broke, frantically ran after his friends as the sun began to set.

----------

“CRAP!” Sasuke seemed to flip out, outta nowhere…and everyone abruptly turned to him, Ramen noodles sticking out of their mouths. “It’s five-to ten?! Already!?” He was staring at the black-rimmed clock on the wall next to them. Hikari’s eyes widened at the boy’s outburst.

“Oh, shit…I really gotta go too, sorry guys” She immediately got up, grabbing her stuff and turning out the door. “Thanks for the Ramen, Naruto!”

“…yeah…” He mumbled, staring at his empty frog wallet.

The sixteen-year old Kunoichi quickly caught up with Sasuke, who…wasn’t running back to the manor, but was returning to the forest training area. Hikari poked him from behind and he abruptly turned his head.

“Wh-Hikari?! What are you doing here?”

“I have a thing…in the forest…and I have to get there, before…ten…tonight.” She was running along side the Uchiha. “Eh…where are you going?”

“None of your business-” He retorted, and the two were silent. Hikari didn’t know how to respond to such a response.

“Ok…well, see you later then!” She turned onto a separate path and disappeared into the darkness.

------------

The white wolf was waiting at the lakeside as Sasuke silently approached from behind (He’s back in wolf–form, by the way).

“Sit.” It said. “I have a lot to tell you.” Sasuke immediately sat and stared at the magnificent creature. The white wolf gazed at the stars as it spoke.

“You’re probably wondering what the hell’s happening. Am I correct?” It turned its head to face the Uchiha, who nodded questioningly. “The wolf which inhabits your body is the night spirit, Tantou. He was sealed inside the kaedama heika twelve years ago. Or, in other words, your “double-sided sword”. As for me, I am the spirit of the moon and sun, Mochizuki. I used to serve the royal family of the moon country, but was betrayed and sealed into their daughter’s body. Only later to be shunned and banned from the village, along with the girl, ultimately ending up here. This was right after my old masters died, and I was hated by thousands ever since. But you must tell this to no one, you hear me? If word spreads that I’m residing in the village of the leaves, I will be rejected from here too.” The white beast looked directly into Sasuke’s eyes. “I have no where else to go. And if I lose you, the chosen one, your village along with anything near it, will perish. Understand?”

“…Hai…” Sasuke muttered. The white beast turned around and sat beside him.

“Now, about the daggers…” It said. “…Your sister, Aeolus Chiyo…She is the daughter of the royal family of the hidden clouds, are you aware of this?” Sasuke nodded. “Her family, like my previous ‘owners’, had full possession of Tantou. But he belonged specifically to the one who attained both the kaedama heika and shinzui keiteki. You know it as your sister’s flute. Although known as the night spirit, Tantou is technically also the dog spirit of the zodiac. Chiyo can unknowingly summon him at her will and he has no choice but to obey. This is because, unlike me, Tantou is under a curse that binds him to the shinzui keiteki. But that only means he has to listen to whatever Chiyo says when he is summoned. His real problem is the daggers, which I will get to.”

Mochizuki turned her head to the golden-brown beast…who… looked extremely confused. “Ok, listen. In a shorter sense…Tantou, basically went crazy. We used to work together…as with the cloud and moon village, and serve our masters…our job was pretty much to protect our designated families from any and all harm…physical, spiritual or mental. After hundreds of years, Tantou got tired of it…one day he just …snapped…he tried to kill everyone he saw. You see, just because we’re spirits, doesn’t mean we can seriously harm people. Tantou and I can become solid forms, as normal wolves. We can also enter into peoples bodies and…control them.”

Sasuke raised an eyebrow at this piece of information. “S-so…why did he choose to take over my body?” The white beast sighed.

“He didn’t.”

“…What?” Sasuke was even more confused than earlier.

“After his ‘rampage’, the rulers of the cloud…eh, Chiyo’s parents…Finally sealed Tantou in the kaedama heika. And the country was at peace for a brief moment. That was right before Konohagakure attacked the village, that same day. Someone from the cloud tried to kidnap Hyuuga Hinata, after Konoha had signed a peace treaty with them. And, thus the two villages were at war once again. Chiyo’s parents were killed; she was left alone, by a river after her mother collapsed, dead. Her mother had left her with her families most precious possessions… the daggers and the Flute…hoping she, at least, would survive the assault. I found her when I was looking for Tantou that night. Probably only because I smelled his scent on the daggers wrapped up in her blanket. I unraveled the blanket to grab the daggers, but was startled of by the leader of the Uchiha’s which caught sight of us... so I had to run before I was caught. That was sixteen years ago…I don’t know what happened after that, but apparently the Uchiha took your sister home and raised her…with you, Sasuke.”

“Wha?” Sasuke’s eyes widened.

“Tantou has been inside the daggers ever since then. The curse was meant to keep him inside the daggers forever. But, will let him escape into a person’s body only if the person who’s holding it is the ‘chosen one’ and it has to be on a full moon. The only one on the planet that was born with the special ability to control him, in other words…Tantou’s inside of you. No doubt he trying to take over your body, but slowly…he’s hoping you won’t notice and resist. But every time you change into Tantou’s form, he becomes stronger and stronger, and will be harder to defy. He’s like one of Orochimaru’s curse seals, one it fully takes you over…you’ll never be able to return to your former self. Your soul will be lost to the night spirit and he will go on a rampage once again…I don’t know if there’s anyone else left alive from the incident who knows the seal used to trap him back in the dagger.” Mochizuki leaned forward and stretched, yawning. “Aaarrrggg……Well…I think that’s enough information to trouble you with for one night. Um, any questions?”

“Just one.” Sasuke stood, and the white wolf cocked her head at him. “Wh-who’s the girl…I mean, the Moon country’s princess…that you were sealed inside?”
